Uncomfortable Silence

Uncomfortable Silence                                    April 17, 2018

10th Wing~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I’ve been thinking a lot about silence. After a prayer. After teenagers fight for a platform in public. After a soldier’s mother begs our government. After a family member bites their tongue to stay silent to keep the peace. 🙁

I was silent going thru can-sur in a way. And for the people who know me, they know that I am the mouthiest introvert ever! 🙂 I didn’t want people to know how bad it was because I knew eventually someone that they loved would be going through the same thing, and I didn’t want to scare them or squash their hopes in any way. And it’s painful to stay silent but it’s the way most people are.

BUT… here is what I’ve thought about. When we are silent it is soooo uncomfortable! Think about it. When we watched that beautiful girl try and relay a message about the shootings at her school, the crowd, who supported her, started chanting and applauding because they couldn’t embrace the silence. I was uncomfortable watching it—but when she spoke again I was in awe. And when the sermon drops off at Easter and silence is expected, I’ve noticed that people start to fidget, me included—and we pray— very quickly. And at funerals, the silence is deafening because we like to inject talk because we think that speech will make it better.

And have you ever turned off the radio in your vehicle? I have. Just lately from my country music. The silence is deafening. So I’ve said okay. I’ll pray. But then, I don’t know what to pray for far to often so sometimes I just say thank you! And I try and listen, really listen, because peeps, there really is no silence in a vehicle.

So I am trying to learn to embrace the silence! Hold it. Let it happen. It’s really hard!!! I can tell you it’s hard for me! But is it worth it? I’m thinking that maybe it is. Since true silence makes me so uncomfortable, and maybe it does you too, let’s sit and visit with it sometimes and see what happens. Let me know how it works for you? 🙂

Dream Big, Smile Often,

Love, Patty 🙂
